There have been a number of comments in the media regarding the title for the next James Bond film, and not understanding its meaning. However, it seems to be rather lazy journalism because the answer can be found in a collection of James Bond short stories.
I love how Quantum of Solace didn't have to explain it directly. You see the scars, but there is little focus on them, and then you hear her backstory. Had tjis been a different director at the time, Camille would have probably showed off the scars and explain them.
Quantum of Solace is the title of a story published in For Your Eyes Only in which James Bond plays a very small part. Bond is attending a dinner party hosted by the Governor for The Bahamas at the end of a week in Nassau before leaving for Miami, in which he feels completely out of place. Once the other guests have left, Bond and the Governor and make small talk to pass the hour or so before Bond feels he can also depart. When he makes a remark about wanting to marry an air hostess, the Governor proceeds to tell a story that he says Bond may find interesting.
The Governor’s story is about a man who meets and marries an air hostess after meeting her on a flight. However, after a posting to Bermuda their marriage began to unravel and when he finally leaves his wife, he makes sure he does everything possible to destroy her life. The story ends with the Governor telling Bond that a relationship “can survive anything so long as some kind of basic humanity exists between the two people” and that all kinds of obstacles can be overcome in a relationship, but not “the death of common humanity in one of the partners”.
He rather pretentiously calls this the “Quantum of Solace” – or as Bond explains it – “the amount of comfort… When the other person not only makes you feel insecure but actually seems to want to destroy you, it’s obviously the end. The Quantum of Solace stands at zero.”
In the years since its release, Quantum of Solace has been unremittingly maligned by Bond fans and non-fans alike, with Rolling Stone, Indiewire and ScreenRant all ranking it among the weaker efforts from the series’ 50-year history. It’s easy to understand why the film faces such derision. Other artists previously rumored as vocalists for the Quantum of Solace theme song included Amy Winehouse, Duffy and Leona Lewis. Winehouse started her attempt with producer Mark Ronson without completing it, but she seemed to resent the producers of Quantum of Solace passing her up for the theme song. The troubled singer commented to New magazine: 'I guess they are going for clean-cut.
The Governor then reveals that the wife had been one of the dinner party guests.
Quantum of Solace was first published in 1960 and seems to be a comment on the state of Ian Fleming’s marriage at the time, although according to Andrew Lycett’s excellent biography of Fleming, it was based on a true story he’d heard in Jamaica.
Since the film will be picking up an hour after Casino Royale ends, in which the love of 007’s life is not only dead but revealed to be a traitor, make your own conclusions as to what the title means.

'Quantum of Solace' has the worst title in the series save for 'Never Say Never Again,' words that could have been used by Kent after King Lear utters the saddest line in all of Shakespeare: 'Never! Never! Never! Never! Never!' The movie opens with Bond involved in a reckless car chase on the tollway that leads through mountain tunnels from Nice through Monte Carlo and down to Portofino in Italy, where Edward Lear lies at rest with his cat, Old Foss. I have driven that way many a time. It is a breathtaking drive.
You won't find that out here. The chase, with Bond under constant machinegun fire, is so quickly cut and so obviously composed of incomprehensible CGI that we're essentially looking at bright colors bouncing off each other, intercut with Bond at the wheel and POV shots of approaching monster trucks. Let's all think together. When has an action hero ever, even once, been killed by machinegun fire, no matter how many hundreds of rounds? The hit men should simply reject them and say, 'No can do, Boss. They never work in this kind of movie.'

The chase has no connection to the rest of plot, which is routine for Bond, but it's about the movie's last bow to tradition. In 'Quantum of Solace' he will share no cozy quality time with the Bond girl (Olga Kurylenko). We fondly remember the immortal names of Pussy Galore, Xenia Onatopp and Plenty O'Toole, who I have always suspected was a drag queen. In this film, who do we get? Are you ready for this? Camille.
